The Ceramic Showcase

Bowl - Middle East

This bowl was designed specifically for the 18th bienale of Vallauris (France) taking place in the summer of 2002. It has been selected as one of the 145 pieces to take part in the exhibit which will take place from june 29th to september 29th in the Espace Loisirs. (have a look at the exhibition site of the biennale as well: : www.vallauris-golfe-juan.com) or at my overview of exhibitions.

The work has won the 'prix de l'Abival' and was purchased by the bienale organization. It is now part of the collection of Musée de la Céramique, Vallauris, France.

The bowl has been constructed from pyrimidal shapes that have been folded open. Their outside has been decorated with a irregular pattern. The opened tabs refer to a floral shape and yield a certain transparancy to the bowl.

The bowl is made from dark clay with a surface treatment of green and yellow ocre bodystains.
Although each of the bricks has been molded individually with small variations between them, a more distant look shows a regular shape. Although the elementary parts are hand crafted and have some variation between them, the bowl itself has a regular surface when observed from a certain distance. The effect is somewhat similar to that in the wooden vegetable parts on the right.
After having finished this bowl, I decided to turn it upside down, presenting it as an autonomous object rather than a utensil (see photographs further below).

diameter 45cm, height 16cm, sold.
